SEV-102: Student-Centered Instruction

Shifting to online teaching takes time, practice, patience, and a healthy dose of self-compassion. This modular program is designed to help teachers at all levels adapt to online and hybrid learning environments while effectively supporting student learning.

SEV-102: Student-Centered Instruction

Program Description

Module 1: Establishing a Culture for Learning Online
Establish processes and procedures that encourage participation; foster learner autonomy through direct instruction, clear behavioral expectations, and self- assessment; and create stronger personal connections with and among students in both hybrid and fully online learning environments.

Module 2: Crafting Engaging Discussion Questions
Engage students in synchronous and asynchronous discussions with well-constructed questions that inspire participation using practical frameworks to help elicit student knowledge, assess understanding, prompt critical thinking, and support collaboration.

Module 3: Facilitating Live Lessons
Adjust your instructional strategies to support online teaching and learning, better manage synchronous online lessons, engage students in active discussions, promote collaborative learning through flexible grouping strategies, and build in time to support individual students.

Module 4: Online and Hybrid Instructional Strategies
Use digital tools to support differentiated instruction and student learning and adapt student-centered instructional strategies—stations, project- based learning, choice boards, flipped learning, playlists, and the 5E instructional model—for use in online and hybrid lessons.

Module 5: Motivation, Engagement, and Flexibility
Motivate your students and, importantly, yourself as you persevere through the learning process necessary to be a great online instructor, plan for greater flexibility and responsiveness, and focus on promoting health and wellness for yourself and your students.
